Hiring is one of the most significant aspects of your business that can have a major impact on your success. If hiring is something you dread or something that you are currently struggling with there are a few easy improvements you can make to your process. Having a clear onboarding process for new hires, makes the transition easier for you but also for your new employees.
Here are four ways you can improve your hiring process simply.
Focus on Education
Sure, almost all businesses have an online presence and your new employee can Google to find out about the company, but how much information is missing from there? During your hiring process take the time to talk about company values, specific products or services you offer and office processes that your employees need to be aware of. There is so much value you can offer to people before they even start that will make them more confident when they walk through the door on the first day. Discussing these items in advance gives your employee the opportunity to process everything over time. The first day of work for a new hire can be overwhelming enough in itself, nevermind if you added all of this extra information to that day.
Improve your Onboarding Process
When hiring someone new you have to remember that your employee could have a variety of factors going on behind the scenes. They could be transitioning out of their old position still, gearing up to get back into the workforce after time off, relocating to a new home, travelling or dealing with things on the personal front to prepare for their first day. During your onboarding process take time to make the transition into their new position smooth and question free. Provide written information about any benefits they will receive, how transferring a 401(k) works in your company, and for an even more personalized onboarding, share some information about local hot spots for lunch, or coffee or even nice areas outdoors where they can get some fresh air. There is so much to think about on the first day and for the first while at a new job, these items can really make your employee feel much more comfortable in their new surroundings. The bonus? It’s simple to put together documents for these items that can be used over and over.
Think Helpful, not a Burden
There are likely going to be a few things you hand off to a new hire that they will need to look over or review before their first day. To avoid overwhelming them, create an organized system to hand off all materials they will need and focus on educating not burdening. You don’t want your new hires to feel as though they are working two jobs at the same time. Share information about tools you use in your office, with any training videos you may have or information about them. Share department and company wide goals and how their role plays into those goals to get them excited about their new position.
Be Personable
People want to work for personable, relatable people. When you hire someone on consider adding a personalized letter from the owner or CEO of the business to their onboarding package. Or include a personalized gift (ex. Business cards) if it’s in your budget. These small items can create a professional level personal connection with each new hire that makes them feel that they are a valuable part of your team.
